The Major

The BS in Medical & Molecular Biology prepares candidates for careers in biotechnology, graduate study in biology, and medical or professional school. It also provides a pathway to certificate programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and subsequent employment as a(n):

  • biotechnology research associate,
  • medical technologist,
  • cytogenetic technologist,
  • diagnostic molecular scientist,
  • or histotechnologist.

All of these technologist positions currently have significant vacancy rates and anticipated job growth.

Curriculum Overview

The Medical & Molecular Biology curriculum includes:

  • foundational science and math courses,
  • a second level foundation in molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry,
  • key laboratory skills and experimental techniques,
  • and upper level medical and molecular biology electives.

Like all MCPHS programs, it incorporates a variety of liberal arts courses, including emphases on communication and ethics in the health sciences. Program majors also have opportunities to minor in premedical studies, public health, and chemistry.

Employment Outlook

Advances in molecular biology have spurred growth in the field of biotechnology, transforming the industries and places in which biological scientists work. Research opportunities have been created in almost all areas of biology, with applications in medicine, agriculture, and the environmental sciences.

Biological scientists are employed by federal, state, and local governments, hospitals and clinics. Work environments include:

  • scientific research and testing laboratories;
  • the pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry;
  • forensic, quality assurance, and agricultural laboratories;
  • and academia.
