Careers

Across the country there is a strong and growing demand for registered nurses, with shortages in some states as high as 30%.

The U.S. Bureau of Health Professionals anticipates that the demand for nurses will increase steadily through the year 2008, and then take off dramatically through 2020. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by the year 2012. Nursing offers wide-ranging opportunities. Nurses can specialize in such areas as critical care, obstetrical, neonatal, pediatric, psychiatric, geriatric and public health nursing.

Students who complete a BSN at MCPHS are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

An MCPHS Nursing Program education fully prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities in a rapidly expanding field. Hospital nursing is just one of the many areas where nurses practice. Other practice settings include home care, hospice, public health, rehabilitation, clinics, offices, schools, military service, health-related industries, occupational settings and health and wellness centers.

Baccalaureate-prepared nurses also are qualified for more rapid career advancement to senior clinical practice roles, management, and graduate study in nursing.

A graduate degree can lead to positions in advanced nursing practice, such as nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, nurse administrator, nurse educator or researcher.
