Your Four-Year Journey
Our expert faculty and advanced equipment provide an exceptional learning experience and the opportunity to explore a variety of clinical specialties.
First-Year Experience
- gain a foundational knowledge of optometry theory, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology
- engage in classroom and lab work that explores the theories and methods of optometry
- learn how to examine patients and develop basic professional competencies in a variety of clinical settings
Second-Year Experience
- advance your knowledge of optometry theory and methods through class and lab work
- participate in primary care clinics and increase your exposure to patients in The Eye and Vision Center at MCPHS and our affiliated community health-center clinics
- learn about the diagnosis and management of eye disease
- begin studies of binocular vision, pathophysiology, neuro-optometry, glaucoma, vision therapy, and contact lenses
Third-Year Experience
- study pediatric and geriatric optometry, research and statistical methods, optometry practice and management, and public health
- complete an online clinical seminar
- participate in specialty care services at The Eye and Vision Center and continue to provide vision care to individuals in our affiliated community health-center clinics
Fourth-Year Experience
- participate in three 16-week externship rotations that will introduce you to a variety of patient-care experiences
- explore specialty opportunities through a range of clinical settings including community health centers, VAs, military bases, and private practices
