MS, PhD Pharmaceutics
Boston
MCPHS Boston campus is an ideal setting for pursuing a graduate degree in pharmaceutics because the area has become a magnet for the nation’s top drug companies. Many of the major players such as Merck, Novartis and Pfizer have located major research facilities in the Boston/Cambridge area.
The MS, PhD program in pharmaceutics prepares students to participate in research to formulate new medications. Classroom and lab work promote a firm understanding of the materials and technologies associated with pharmaceutical product development, manufacture and evaluation.
The program focuses on the following:
- The study of pharmaceutical dosage forms
- The release of a drug from the dosage form
- Pharmacokinetics – the study of the process by which a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated by the body
Research projects have typically involved development of new drug products, novel dosage forms, the release of a drug from new dosage forms, pre-formulation investigation of new drug entities, and pharmacokinetics.
Career opportunities for graduates with a degree in pharmaceutics range from researching, administering and managing the development of new medications in the pharmaceutical industry, to teaching and conducting research in an academic setting to regulatory oversight in a government agency.
