Demand for radiologic technologists is strong across the country in a variety of health care settings. According to the US Department of Labor Statistics, 55,000 more radiologic sciences professionals will be needed by 2008 in the US. In addition, as the population grows and ages and the demand for diagnostic imaging increases, job opportunities for radiologic technologists are expected to grow faster than average (more than 27%) through 2012.

Through a rigorous course of study, state-of-the-art professional courses, and clinical experience, MCPHS prepares students to compete for jobs in a range of radiologic sciences careers:

  • Nuclear medicine technologists
    • Complement the work of radiologists, cardiologists, oncologists and nuclear medicine physicians
    • Prepare patients for nuclear medicine procedures
    • Prepare and administer nuclear medicine radiopharmaceuticals
    • Operate instrumentation for the detection and imaging of radiopharmaceuticals in performance of in-vivo and in-vitro examinations
    • Apply quality control techniques
    • Participate in research and the testing of new equipment
  • Radiation therapists
    • Collaborate with radiation oncology teams to determine the best course of radiation treatment for each patient
    • Use state-of-the-art technology to treat cancers and some non-cancerous conditions
      • Localize the treatment area for field placement
    • Provide ongoing support for patients and families
  • Radiographers
    • Use ionizing radiation to create images of body parts and organ systems for medical diagnostic purposes
    • Prepare and position patients for X-rays
    • Educate patients and explain the examination
    • Perform radiographic procedures
    • Evaluate image quality
  • MRI Technologist
    • Consults with radiologist and other physicians regarding procedures to be performed
    • Perform MRI diagnostic procedures on patients
    • Educate patients, staff and visitors regarding MRI safety
