Fellowship overview
The Clinical Pharmacology Study Group (CPSG) is a multidisciplinary team involved in clinical trials of investigational medicines. The majority of the protocols involve medications used in the treatment of systemic inflammatory disorders (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, Chrohn's Disease, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis) while others include osteoarthritis, gout, fibromyalgia and back pain. CPSG is involved in a study using stem cells for the treatment of Chrohn's Disease. The group is led by Dr. Charles Birbara and Mary Coughlin, BSN, who have a combined experience of more than 60 years in clinical trials.
Program Description
The Clinical Pharmacology Study Group, in collaboration with Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is pleased to offer a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in clinical trials research and academia. Fellows will spend the majority of the time with the Clinical Pharmacology Study Group functioning as the Investigational Pharmacist in phase-2 and phase-3 clinical trials. In addition, the Fellow will serve as a sub-investigator under Dr. Charles Birbara in many investigational studies.
The academic component of the Fellowship is to learn and practice the responsibilities of a faculty member: teaching, scholarship and service. The Fellow will provide didactic lectures, develop an elective and precept students on advanced experiential rotations for the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences—Worcester/Manchester. In addition, the Fellow will provide service to both the School of Pharmacy-Worcester/Manchester as well as to the community.
Upon completion of this program, the Fellow will be able to independently perform the duties of an Investigational Pharmacy Specialist , integrate into a clinical research team and provide assessment of research studies.

Responsibilities
- Prepare investigational and biologic medications and serve as the ‘unblinded’ personnel in the trial.
- Systematically evaluate and provide assessment on Investigator protocols.
- Participate in Investigator Meetings.
- Provide didactic and experiential education to pharmacy students at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
- Create a poster/research project suitable for publication or for presentation at national pharmacy meetings.
The Fellowship will provide a competitive stipend and benefit package, including health insurance and vacation days.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE—accredited college of pharmacy. In addition, candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Prior postgraduate training in clinical or research setting is preferred.
Certificate of Completion
Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences—Worcester/Manchester and Clinical Pharmacology Study Group will award a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of the Fellowship program.
