UMass Memorial Medical Center Cardiology Residency

The UMass Memorial Medical Center Cardiology Residency Program is a postgraduate training program that focuses on the development of clinical skills needed to provide safe and effective patient-centered medication management. In addition, residents are involved in both clerkship preceptorship and didactic lectures through the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Worcester campus. Furthermore, residents are trained to be proficient in outcomes research.

UMass Memorial Medical Center is a level-1, 345-bed tertiary care medical center. The institution is equipped with three cardiac catheterization suites that operate 24 hours a day with an annual caseload of 2500 patients. In addition, the hospital has a 16-bed coronary care unit, 10-bed cardiothoracic surgery unit and sees over 1,000 patients in the outpatient anticoagulation clinic. Inpatient rotations include the Coronary Care Unit, a pharmacist-managed Inpatient Anticoagulation Consult Service, a pharmacist-managed Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) Care Team, and Heart Failure Service. Ambulatory practice rotations include the Anticoagulation Clinic, Heart Failure Clinic, and Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic.

The resident will collaborate with preceptors, cardiologists, and cardiology pharmacy fellow to complete and publish one cardiovascular pharmacy project. Finally, the resident will participate in classroom instruction for an elective course “Clinical Study Design and Methodology: A Focus on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy” for the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
