George Robert White was one of Boston’s leading citizens and a role model for philanthropists everywhere. Mr. White was a generous benefactor to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and to the City of Boston. He derived his fortune from the Potter Drug and Chemical Company, an international company of which he was president. He bequeathed the bulk of his considerable estate as a “permanent charitable trust fund” known as the George Robert White Fund to create “works of public utility and beauty.” Although he shunned publicity, Mr. White often brought his lunch to the Longwood Avenue construction site at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, and oversaw the minute construction details of the elegant building that was named in his honor: George Robert White Building.

The club is named after Ephraim Eliot, M.D., the first president of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Dr. Eliot graduated from Harvard College in 1780 and studied medicine with Isaac Rand, M.D., a distinguished Boston physician. Dr. Eliot served as the College president from 1823 – 1825, a period of time when the College devoted its efforts to providing lectures on professional subjects at membership meetings and gathering professional literature for a library. Dr. Eliot was a physician, whose allegiance to pharmacy took precedence over his medical practice, who compounded and dispensed medicinals and produced “medicine chests” at his Union Street shop.
