A Legacy of Excellence

Travel back in time to December, 1823. Fourteen apothecaries, deeply committed to their profession, meet in a local hotel and agree to organize an association to educate apprentices and encourage the use of superior-quality drugs in their compounds. Together, they establish the first institution of higher learning in Boston: Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.

As the second school of pharmacy in the United States, MCP set the standard for excellence that is the foundation of the College’s professional and academic mission. Its story is profound and mirrors society’s evolution in the fields of pharmacy and health sciences. The original two-year program graduated two men in 1869; today, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science enrolls nearly 3,300 students on three New England campuses, and offers 30 programs that include dental hygiene, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, radiologic sciences, physician assistant studies, nursing, and premedical and health studies. The dental hygiene degree option was added with the College’s 2002 acquisition of the prestigious Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists.

Recognizing the School’s remarkable heritage, MCPHS has published A Legacy of Excellence, which traces the College’s history from 1823 to the present day. The 60-page book features priceless black-and-white images from the MCPHS and Forsyth archives. More than 100 full-color photographs document the College’s exciting growth over the past 10 years.

A Legacy of Excellence is available in soft cover to members of the College’s George Robert White Society and in hard cover to members of the President’s Circle, Chairman’s Club, Agnes Wilbur Society and Ephraim Eliot Society.

A copy of A Legacy of Excellence will be sent automatically to those who join or renew their membership in one of the above giving societies.
