English as a Second Language
MCPHS provides support to students whose native language is not English through English as a Second Language (ESL) services. An ESL specialist/Academic Counselor provides individual and group consultations. Through these services we assess learning styles and offer resource assistance to students. Various services are offered including:
- Writing, reading, and speaking skills improvement
- ESL learning strategies
- ESL critical thinking development
- Reference material
- Writing proficiency, exam/oral proficiency, exam coursework and preparation
ESL Services uses COMPASS/ESL software as a diagnostic and remedial tool to identify students who may be at risk for problems with written language proficiency and assist them in developing their language skill.
To assist students with their oral language proficiency, the office of ESL Services uses Pronunciation Power. This software program allows students to build oral language skill through self-paced exercises and oral language activities.
