FAQ: Using the Proxy Server to Access E-Resources
What is a proxy server?
The proxy server acts as an intermediary server to insure that you are an authorized user of our licensed databases, e-journals, and e-books. You will connect to the EZproxy, which will then connect you to the licensed web resources. Because the EZproxy runs on a machine on MCPHS' network, the resource vendor/publisher sees the request as coming from an IP address on our network, thus permitting access.
Why use a proxy server?
Because of licenses, contractual agreements, and copyright restrictions, access to many electronic resources and services must be limited to MCPHS faculty, students, and staff. The proxy server authenticates you as a valid MCPHS user, regardless of your physical connection point.
What does this mean to you??
Easier access to our electronic resources from both on and off campus.
Why do I sometimes have to enter an additional username and password?
Some publishers and vendors still require that a separate username and password be used, and whenever possible we have tried to keep these the same.
- For Databases and E-books , these resources will be denoted by the phrase: “UN/PW REQUIRED”
- For E-journals , check for this note in SFX window: "Note:UN/PW required for FT access"
MCPHS users will be able to link to the list of usernames and passwords from the electronic resources pages.
** Off-campus users: It's very important that you have an active MCPHS e-mail account! Please contact the IS Help Desk (617-732-2170) if you need to set up your account.
