Help Using the Library
Librarians offer instruction on all aspects of information retrieval and evaluation including local library use and electronic resources.
Instruction is offered in a variety of formats, including:
- One-on-one or small group, hands-on sessions in library
- Lectures and demonstrations to larger groups
- Computer-assisted instructions programs
Library Instruction Modules
Completion of these online instruction programs is required for graduation for all undergraduate or first professional degree programs on the Boston Campus:
INF 101 - Introduction to the Libraries and Library Services
Credit, none; degree requirement
- Introduces the library and its services
- Identifies information resources available through the libraries' web page, including the online catalog and electronic journals locator database
- Discusses access to local and regional libraries, including the Fenway Library Consortium
Computer-based information and quiz take approximately 1 hour to complete.
INF 102 - Research Methods and Database Searching
Prerequisite: INF 101; credit, none; degree requirement
- Introduces the basic concepts of research, including search strategy and retrieval techniques using key word and subject searching
- Presents an introduction to the libraries' research databases
Computer-based information and quiz take approximately 75 minutes.
INF 103 - Advanced Research Methods
Prerequisite: INF 101, INF 102; credit, none; degree requirement
- Presents more sophisticated searching techniques and the use of other computerized sources
- Includes evaluation of information found on the Internet and selection of specialty databases
- Provides overviews of copyright, plagiarism and citation of sources
Computer-based information and quiz take approximately 90 minutes.
