CINAHL

Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature

Our access to the CINAHL database will change from Ovid to EBSCO beginning July 1, 2008.

Why the change?

EBSCO Publishing bought the CINAHL database a few years ago. The Library has been providing CINAHL through Ovid, but our subscription expires June 30. Because Ovid will no longer be permitted to host CINAHL after 2008, we need to subscribe to this database through EBSCO.

Try it now!

From now until June 30, you will have access to CINAHL from both Ovid and EBSCO, so feel free to experiment with the new interface. You’ll find the “CINAHL via EBSCO” option listed on the Library’s Electronic Databases page. CINAHL users should plan to make the transition to EBSCO as soon as possible, to allow plenty of time for becoming familiar with the new search interface.

A HUGE advantage!!!

One of the huge plusses to our subscription through EBSCO is access to the Full Text of over 580 journals to which we don’t currently subscribe, including titles such as: Critical Care Nurse, Nursing Research, Journal of Transcultural Nursing, Journal of Community Health Nursing, Nursing Science Quarterly, and British Journal of Nursing! We’re very excited about this feature and happy to be able to provide it to you!!

About CINAHL

“CINAHL® provides indexing for 2,931 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 1,000,000 records dating back to 1981. Offering complete coverage of English-language nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association, CINAHL covers nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines. In addition, this database offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters. Searchable cited references for more than 1,200 journals are also included. Full text material includes 70 journals plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials.” Our subscription to CINAHL through EBSCO also includes the Pre-CINAHL dataset. Pre-CINAHL is intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles, and is collection of records that provide basic bibliographic information before they are indexed with CINAHL Headings. As Pre-CINAHL journal articles are indexed, the records are replaced with complete CINAHL records.
