Molly Whalen BSDH ’11 - Dental Hygiene Alum Combines “Scrubs and Crown”

Molly Whalen, a 2011 MCPHS Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene graduate, began her reign on July 9 as Miss Massachusetts 2011 at the 72nd Annual Miss Massachusetts Scholarship Pageant held in Worcester. Chosen from among 15 contestants who qualified for the pageant in competitions throughout the Commonwealth, Molly is an accomplished vocalist who has performed the National Anthem at more than 100 public events and appeared in countless musical theater productions.

During her year of service as Miss Massachusetts, Molly plans to highlight her platform, “Smart Smiles: Promoting the Importance of Oral Health” as well as advocating for The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the national platform of the Miss America Organization. Recently she volunteered with Forsyth dental hygiene students and faculty at the annual Back to School Bash, held in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood, by providing dental screenings for, and delivering oral health instructions to, Boston Public Schools student attendees. The experience provided her with a great opportunity to combine “scrubs and crown.” Molly will also appear at the Yankee Dental Congress 2012 that will be held in Boston on January 26. At the convention, Molly will speak about the importance of oral health awareness and her commitment to this cause.

Molly began to set goals for herself very early in life. At five years of age she decided that she wanted to become Miss Massachusetts. Although the sparkle of the crown initially motivated her; she later realized that she would seek the crown for more than sparkle. She recognized the importance and relevance to her life of the four points of the pageant crown – service, scholarship, style and success.

She displayed similar determination in her choice of a dental hygiene career. Since she had always loved science and enjoyed working with people, she sought a career that incorporated both. After speaking with a few dental hygienists following a routine visit to her dentist, Molly decided that dental hygiene would be the perfect fit! She chose the MCPHS Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene when she learned that she could earn her bachelor’s degree in only three years.

As a busy young lady, Molly continues to fulfill her responsibilities as Miss Massachusetts while she pursues a degree in applied nutrition at Northeastern University. Dental hygiene faculty, Molly reports, motivated her to advance her education with a master’s degree in nutrition. Her sustaining interests in the nutritional aspects of dental hygiene and how nutrition correlates with oral health, will assuredly enhance her chances of achieving her goal to become a dental hygiene educator. Perhaps she will join the Forsyth faculty in just a few years.

On January 14, Molly Whalen will compete in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. As an MCPHS alumnus, graduate student at Northeastern University, accomplished vocalist, state-wide pageant winner and outstanding role model, Miss Massachusetts 2011 carries out an ambitious day-to-day schedule of activities. But, if anything, Molly Whalen has never lacked ambition. You can follow her journey leading up to the pageant on Facebook at Miss Massachusetts 2011-Molly Whalen.
