Boston Campus Holds 139th Commencement

More than 400 students received degrees at the 139th Commencement of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on May 18 at the Bayside Expo and Conference Center in Boston.

Stacey Hebert, a graduating pharmacy student from Merrimack, NH delivered the student speech. Hebert came to MCPHS in January of 2002 after spending a year and a half studying journalism at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. After board certification, she plans to work as a full-time pharmacist at Rice’s Pharmacy, an independent compounding pharmacy in Nashua, NH. In her speech, Hebert commended the Class of 2007 on its ability to balance the rigors of school and personal life. “We have met our best friends and our mentors, we have struggled together and we have grown together,” she said. “Our small MCPHS community has become a second family to many of us which makes today bittersweet.”

Kathleen O’Loughlin, President and CEO of Delta Dental of Massachusetts, delivered the commencement address. O’Loughlin graduated cum laude from Boston University and went on to earn her doctorate at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and a Master’s degree in Public Health and Health Care Policy from Harvard University. In her remarks, she encouraged the graduates to both acknowledge and embrace their responsibilities as health care providers. “We both come from organizations committed to creating positive change in the communities we serve,” O’Loughlin said. “You are in a position to make a profound impact on your community and our society through your newly minted degrees.”

Immediately following the address, O’Loughlin was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the College, for her many contributions to dental education and her support of the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene

MCPHS Chairman David L. Maher presented the 2007 Trustees’ Award For Teaching Excellence to Beth Welch, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and Director of the Non-Traditional PharmD (NTPD) program, for “providing leadership for the program, teaching a number of its courses, and precepting students in their advanced clinical rotations.”

President Monahan also made two other presentations. Janis P. Bellack, who is stepping down after serving seven years as Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost, was named Provost Emerita. George Humphrey, Associate Vice President for External Affairs, was awarded the College Medal. Over a 27-year span, Humphrey has served in multiple roles, including faculty member, department chair, and vice president.

Presiding over the presentation of degree candidates were Dr. Bellack and Jean Joyce Brady, Dean of Students. Serving as College Marshals were: Joyce-Brady, Joseph Ferullo, Assistant Professor, Pharmacy Practice; Alfred Garafalo, Professor, Arts and Sciences; and Carla Moschella, Assistant Professor, Health Sciences. Following the recessional, all guests were invited to a Presidential Reception to honor the graduates and their families. President Monahan also hosted a luncheon for Trustees, faculty, staff and other distinguished guests.
