College Holds 4th Annual Fall Health Care Symposium

On November 1, more than 200 pharmacists, MCPHS students, faculty, alumni and other pharmacy and industry professionals attended the 4th Annual Fall Health Care Symposium at the Sheraton Colonial in Wakefield.

The Symposium is fast becoming a favorite continuing education program, attracting nationally known speakers to provide timely presentations of interest to pharmacists. Dennis Lyons, Vice President for Alumni and Professional Affairs, kicked off the program and provided an update on the College’s recent projects and initiatives. He was followed by Andrew Kroger, MD, MPH, Coordinating Center for Infectious Disease, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who presented “CDC Initiatives: Prevention & Guidelines for Immunization.”

The day continued with the following topics and speakers: “Minimizing Medication Errors – Children are NOT Little Adults” presented by Susan L. Drea, RPh, PharmD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, MCPHS; “New Insights in the Treatment of Bipolar Depression” presented by Amjad Bahnassi, MD of the Griswold Behavioral Health Center in Palmer, Mass.; “Pharmacotherapy: Current and Future Treatments for Obesity” by Caroline M. Apovian, MD, FACP, Director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at Boston University Medical Center; “Pharmacy Under Siege: Contemporary Legal Issues” presented by Attorney Edward D. Rickert of Smith, Rickert & Smith in Chicago, Illinois; and a “Board of Pharmacy Law Update” presented by James D. Coffey, RPh, Director of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy.

Participants were able to receive additional credits by participating in the poster sessions, where MCPHS faculty and sixth year PharmD students were on hand to present their posters based on this year’s theme “Patient Safety.”

Added to this year’s event was an industry exhibit hall where pharmaceutical company, pharmacy and organization representatives met with participants to answer questions about their products and services. Companies represented were Accu-Chek Diabetes Care, CVS Pharmacy, GlaxoSmithKline, Hannaford Supermarket Pharmacy, Massachusetts Pharmacists Association, Merck, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, PriCara – Unit of Ortho-McNeil, Inc., Rite Aid Pharmacy, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., Tap Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Teva Neuroscience, Walgreens and Watson Pharmaceuticals.
