MCPHS Appoints Dr. Michelle Kalis Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

Charles F. Monahan Jr., President of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, this morning announced the appointment of Dr. Michelle M. Kalis as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost of the College, effective immediately.

"I am extremely honored to be selected for the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost position, and look forward to working closely with the faculty, staff and students on all three campuses to achieve our collective vision," said Dr. Kalis. "As our pharmacy, health sciences, arts and sciences and international programs continue to grow, the College is in an important position to be a leader in the education of the next generation of health care professionals in New England and around the globe."

Dr. Kalis most recently served as acting Provost and Associate Provost for Health Sciences Education, and also holds the rank of professor of pharmacology. A national search to permanently fill the position began in August. In the past year, Dr. Kalis led the College’s successful effort to achieve continued full accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and also filled several long-standing vacancies with internationally recognized leaders in their respective fields.

"Experience in faculty mentoring and development, strategic planning, assessment, and most notably accreditation were all noted by the search committee," said President Monahan, immediately after the announcement. "She enters this position at a time of exciting growth within our academic offerings, and I have every faith that she will effectively lead our faculty and staff through this period."

Dr. Kalis received her B.S. degree in pharmacy in 1986 from the University of Georgia and went on to earn a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology from Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia) in 1990. After completing her Ph.D. she was a postdoctoral fellow at Ciba-Geigy Corporation in the Cardiovascular Division. Following a year as a senior scientist at American Cyanamid, Dr. Kalis joined the Division of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Medicinal Chemistry at the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences of Long Island University in 1993. In 1998 she received tenure and was promoted to associate professor. In 2000, she joined the College as associate dean and associate professor for the School of Pharmacy – Boston.

Dr. Kalis has served nationally on committees for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the Education Division of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. She has served as a site visitor for the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. She serves as a peer reviewer for several journals. Her research interests include cardiovascular pharmacology and pharmacy education. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, book/book chapters in scientific and/or educational journals.
