Twenty 6th Year Pharmacy Students Volunteer at Boston Diabetes Expo
On March 15 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, Jennifer Goldman-Levine, PharmD, CDE, Associate Professor, and Susan Jacobson R.Ph, MS, Assistant Professor from the Department of Pharmacy Practice, led a group of 20 sixth year students as volunteers at the ADA (American Diabetes Association) Diabetes Expo 2008. The students spent the day screening over 700 patients for three things: blood glucose levels; A1C’s, which helps determine patients’ average blood glucose over a period of three months; and blood pressure, as increases can raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. The goal of patients with diabetes, Dr. Goldman-Levine says, is to keep their blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible to minimize complications associated with chronically high levels. The group plans to expand the number of students conducting screenings when they return to the Diabetes Expo in 2009.
