Worcester/Manchester School of Pharmacy Holds 5th Commencement

A record 154 students received Doctor of Pharmacy degrees at the 5th Commencement of the School of Pharmacy – Worcester/Manchester on June 15 at the DCU Center in Worcester. The class of 2007 included the first group of pharmacy students to graduate from the PharmD program in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The Student Address was given by Jenna Therese Cherchio, the First Honor Graduate whose hometown is Syracuse, New York. Dr. Guo Qing, president of Hangzhou Medical College (China), delivered the Commencement Address. Dr. Guo described growing up in Zhang-Shu, a city known as the capital of traditional Chinese medicine. His grandfather made a medicinal wine designed to increase intelligence and stamina. “Today I have the honor and fortune to speak to you,” he told the graduates. “And I believe it might have something to do with the fact that I drank so much magical wine made by my grandfather.” Dr. Guo encouraged the audience to take a global approach to solving health care problems. “Let us join hands and work together to make positive contributions to the health of all human beings,” he said.

Honorary degrees were awarded to Dr. Guo, as well as pharmacists Thomas H. Borysek (Class of 1965) and Vahrij Manoukian. Mr. Borysek was acknowledged for his “strong leadership as an alumnus of the College who has served his alma mater in several capacities” and for his long-term service in the Food and Drug Administration. Mr. Manoukian was cited for his contributions as a community pharmacist in New Hampshire and “for his lifelong commitment to the highest standards of professional practice and civic duty.”

President Charles F. Monahan presented the College Medal to Trustee Judith P. Ronshagen (Class of 1970) “in recognition of her contributions to hospital pharmacy, her community service in New Hampshire and “for her dedication as an alumna of the College.”
