College Receives 1st State Pharmacist License Ever Issued
At a ceremony on September 9, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences received the first pharmacist license ever issued in the Commonwealth. The certificate was donated by MCPHS alumnus Chuck Young BSP ‘69, former executive secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, and will be placed on permanent display in the Boston campus’ advanced pharmacy practice lab. On hand to accept the certificate were MCPHS President Charles F. Monahan Jr., and Douglas J. Pisano, Dean of the School of Pharmacy-Boston. Sophia Pasedis, president of the Board of Registration in Pharmacy, was also in attendance along with several other board members and MCPHS faculty.
The license (“Certificate #1”) was issued on October 28, 1885 to Henry M. Whitney. Mr. Whitney was born in 1828 and was a resident of Lawrence, Mass. During his career he served as president of the Massachusetts State Pharmacy Association, local secretary of the American Pharmacy Association, and president and executive secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, for which he was a member from its inception.
