Dr. William Thomas, Geriatric Medicine Expert, Speaks in Manchester
Dr. William Thomas, an international authority on geriatric medicine and assistant clinical professor in family medicine, visited the Manchester campus for the second year in a row on September 16. (Several 2nd and 3rd year pharmacy students even made a special point to return from rotations to attend the lecture.) To a packed room of pharmacy, nursing and physician assistant studies students, Dr. Thomas spoke about a variety of current pharmacy topics, including the origins of some widely used drugs. He also analyzed what students should do if they ever find themselves in a position of disagreement with a drug manufacturer. Dr. Thomas cited a real-life example of a new pharmacist who held her ground in the face of significant pressure from a large drug company, because she did not believe that a drug was safe and refused to approve its use. One year later, several foreign countries discovered that the drug was indeed unsafe, and she was given an award by the President of the United States. Shortly following the discussion, Dr. Thomas attended a reception where he signed his book “The AARP Guide to Pills.” The event was sponsored by Student Affairs and the Office of the Executive Director.
