PA Students Volunteer At Beth Israel Disaster Drill

On October 8, 30 physician assistant students and faculty from the Boston campus volunteered in a mass casualty disaster drill at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). The drill’s scenario involved a large structure collapse at nearby Fenway Park that caused dozens of injuries. Starting at 6 a.m., the students were made up to have mock injuries and then played triage patients transported to the BIDMC Emergency Department for treatment. The large-scale drill allowed hospital staff from several departments to practice handling large numbers of seriously injured patients, and helped them prepare for any real disaster that may occur. Wayne DiMatteo, Instructor of Physician Assistant Studies, organized and coordinated the MCPHS volunteer team.
