College Holds 5th Annual Fall Health Care Symposium
On October 30, more than 200 pharmacists, MCPHS students, faculty, alumni and other pharmacy and industry professionals attended the 5th Annual Fall Health Care Symposium at the Sheraton Colonial in Wakefield. Dennis Lyons, Vice President for Government and Professional Affairs, kicked off the program and provided an update on the College’s recent projects and initiatives. He was followed by Robert T. Eberhardt, MD, Director of Vascular Services at Boston Medical Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, who presented the first session, “Deep Vein Thrombosis: A Preventable Killer.”
The day continued with the following topics and speakers: “Melanoma Management: What Every Pharmacist Needs to Know” presented by Dr. Andrew E. Werchniak, MD, of the Brigham an Women’s Department of Dermatology; “Emerging Treatments for Crohn’s Disease” presented by Richard L. Curtis, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University and Chief of Gastroenterology at Newton Wellesley Hospital; “Assessing the Use of Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation for the Prevention of Disease” by Rebecca Couris, PhD, RPh, Professor of Nutrition Science and Pharmacy at MCPHS; “Contemporary Issues in Pharmacy Law” presented by Katherine Keough, MS, Executive Director of Government Affairs and Continung Education at MCPHS and Philip J. Gordon, Esq., a Managing Partner at Gordon Law Group, LLP. The education session were supported by grants from Elan, Procter & Gamble, Sanofi-aventis and UCB.
Participants also enjoyed a moving lecture by Shonda Schilling, a melanoma survivor and founder of the Shade Foundation of America. Shonda shared her personal experiences fighting and recovering from melanoma. Additionally she shared photos of herself showing the physical impact of her melanoma battle. She expressed to the group how it has changed her everyday life in “the sun” and what she’s done to make others aware of the effects of melanoma as a “real” cancer.
The exhibit hall, where pharmaceutical company, pharmacy and organization representatives met with participants to answer questions about their products and services, included representatives from Abbott Diabetes Care, Axcan Pharma US, Inc., Endo Pharmaceuticals,, GlaxoSmithKline, Hannaford Supermarket & Pharmacy, Hallmark Health System, Life, Scan/Johnson & Johnson, Massachusetts Pharmacists Association, Medicine Shoppe, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Purdue Pharma, L.P., Rite Aid Pharmacy, Teva NeuroScience and Walgreens.
