Worcester & Manchester Campuses Lead Thanksgiving Food Drives
Over the past few weeks, students from the Worcester and Manchester campuses led successful Thanksgiving donation drives for their respective areas.
On November 20, a group of Physician Assistant Studies students from MCPHS-Worcester delivered 35 Thanksgiving baskets to the Salvation Army in Worcester. The donation drive was organized by Karen Bertasso and students from the first-year PA class, with faculty, staff and students all contributing. All of the baskets contained a full assortment of stuffing, instant potatoes, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing mix, roasting pans, pudding, desserts, coffee and, of course, turkey. The supplies were delivered to Chris Hilliard, Director of Social Services at the Salvation Army, who was immediately on the phone with dozens of families on a waiting list for a Thanksgiving meal.
In Manchester, the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) organized a Thanksgiving basket drive for New Horizons soup kitchen in Manchester. The group collected 40 baskets from faculty, staff and students and obtained an additional three boxes of miscellaneous food items for donation. A competition was also held between five classes to see which class could collect the largest number of items for the baskets, and the ultimate winner was the second-year Pharmacy class. Special thanks go out to Sarah Sweatt, Staci Marquardt, and Katelin Cornell for assembling the baskets and collecting the cash donations used for the baskets. The weekend of November 21-22 also marked the first time NCPA helped the annual “Shop With Kids” program coordinated by the Salvation Army. Five students spent Sunday afternoon with underprivileged children from the community shopping for warm clothes at Macy’s.
