DMS Students Participate in Annual Musculoskeletal Workshop at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center

  • On Saturday, June 8, 15 general track diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) students volunteered their time at the annual Musculoskeletal Workshop at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. The students were lead by Professor Erin O'Hora, BS, RDMS, RVT, Assistant Professor and DMS Clinical Coordinator, and the event was organized by Nicole Yakavonis, BS, RDMS, RVT, RMSKS, RT(R), the Operations Manager of Ultrasound at Lahey. This is the second year in which DMS students volunteered their time as patients.

The all-day event consisted of miniature educational lectures followed by a hands-on scanning activity. During this portion, students reversed their traditional role as practitioner, and instead played the part of patient as Lahey sonographers and radiologists demonstrated how to operate a musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound.

During the role-play, students learned about the capabilities and limitations of MSK ultrasounds, as well as their importance to the field of medical imaging—the ultrasound operators, which included seasoned sonographers holding over 15 years of experience, explained that they've noticed a spike in requests for the exams.

Students left the event having gained firsthand knowledge essential to performing sought-after diagnostic MSK ultrasound exams. They also developed an appreciation for the life-long learning opportunities that come with a career in DMS, and the hands-on experiences that are uniquely afforded by their MCPHS education.

"Our participation in this event highlights the quality of our DMS program—from the professionalism of our students to the level of education we provide in not only the core ultrasound courses, but specialty topics such as musculoskeletal ultrasound," said Professor O'Hora. "I received several positive comments regarding our student’s professional behavior and their knowledge of musculoskeletal ultrasound."
