MCPHS School of Pharmacy Attends New UMass Medical School Interprofessional Education Event

  • On August 23, 2019, the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Medical School hosted students and faculty from both the Worcester and Manchester campuses of the MCPHS School of Pharmacy at the Patient Safety & Quality Interstitial Curriculum Interprofessional Education event in Worcester, MA. Thirty-five MCPHS Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students and 140 UMass Medical (MD) students participated in the half-day event. The event featured many small, interactive group sessions, including team building and quality improvement exercises, a mock root cause analysis, and safety-related, board-style case questions. Faculty from MCPHS and UMass's medical and graduate nursing schools worked together to facilitate the sessions.

The event, which was led by Patricia Seymour, MD, and Susan Zweizig, MD, was conceptualized at the UMass Medical School/MCPHS IPE Symposium held in May. Faculty are continuing to developing additional intercollegiate events to promote collaboration across both schools and programs.
