Diabetes Pharmacotherapy Update 2023

The pharmacologic approach to diabetes management is rapidly evolving with the introduction of many new medications and clinical evidence. Pharmacists should employ an evidence-based approach to optimize outcomes in patients with diabetes and other comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. This program will highlight the new trends and pharmacologic approach to diabetes management, focusing on the evidence of antihyperglycemic agents with their proven benefit to cardiovascular and renal outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the important updates to the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes 2023
  • Choose appropriate pharmacotherapy options for patients with type 2 diabetes and comorbid conditions such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease
  • Apply continuous glucose monitoring system into practice to optimize pharmacotherapy regimen in patients with type 2 diabetes
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of new medications and devices for the management of type 2 diabetes

Presenter

Hailey Choi, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is an ambulatory care pharmacy specialist with the Board Certification in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. She practices at the Mount Auburn Hospital Primary Care Center in Cambridge, providing medication therapy management and chronic disease management focusing on diabetes while providing experiential education to pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.

Dr. Choi holds a Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Choi is interested in working with a culturally diverse patient population and working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to manage chronic disease states in an ambulatory care setting. Her research interests are focused on diabetes, medication reconciliation, and de-prescribing potentially inappropriate medications in older adults.
