Drug Monitoring and Medication Selection for Gender Affirming Care of Transgender and Gender Non-Binary People (TGNB)

The increasing prevalence of Transgender and Gender Non-binary individuals (TGNB) seeking gender affirming pharmacotherapy necessitates that healthcare professionals have a better understanding of drug monitoring and medication selection for these patients. A better understanding of, and empathy for, this population by healthcare providers facilitates positive patient provider connections.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize appropriate terminology for addressing individuals in the Transgender and Gender Non-binary communities.
  • List first line hormonal therapy used for both MTF and FTM.
  • Discuss the expected and desired effects of hormone therapy.
  • Identify risks, differences and monitoring parameters of various hormone and non-hormone therapy used in gender affirming care.


Alex E. Rock, PharmD, AAHIVP, BCPS
Alex E. Rock, PharmD, AAHIVP, BCPS is a 2016 graduate of MCPHS University Worcester. He began working at Tulane Medical Center as a clinical pharmacist and ambulatory care pharmacist in an adult Cystic Fibrosis clinic after graduating. Eventually Alex decided to pursue residency conducting his PGY1 Pharmacy resident at Baystate Medical Center followed by PGY2 specializing in Infectious Diseases and HIV at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has a passion for HIV Medicine, the care revolving around the LGBTQ community, homeless patients and patients struggling with opioid use disorder. Alex currently works as a Clinical Pharmacist for Commonwealth Care Alliance ensuring that the most vulnerable patients receive the most appropriate care
