Advancements in The Era of Precision Medicine: Focus on Breast Cancer

Precision medicine is an emerging treatment approach which allows for a more accurate determination of which treatment and prevention strategies will be most effective for individual patients. It is important that pharmacists stay educated on the latest developments in this field as they have the unique skills and knowledge necessary to advance the integration of personalized medicine into clinical practice. The purpose of this presentation is to educate pharmacists on the science behind precision medicine and companion diagnostics, how it is currently being utilized in clinical practice, and the pharmacist’s role in practicing precision medicine

This course will provide an overview of precision medicine approaches and challenges as they relate to oncology, with a special focus on breast cancer treatment modalities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the precision medicine approach to treatment of diseases, including the treatment of breast cancer.
  • Explain how to integrate concepts of precision medicine in oncology into regular practice.
  • Discuss the evolution of advancements in precision medicine in breast cancer, and how they have been applied clinically
  • Describe the role of a pharmacist in the application of precision medicine in patient care.
  • Identify challenges associated with the integration of the pharmacist in clinical application of these therapies.

Presenters

Maghan Ballantyne, PharmD, RPh
Maghan Ballantyne is a 2019 PharmD graduate from the University of Rhode Island. She is currently completing a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship program with AstraZeneca, supporting the CVMD Medical Information and Medical Affairs teams.

Kevin Huang, PharmD
Kevin is a Pharm.D. graduate from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University. Among his pharmacy practice experiences, he completed rotations in the Global Regulatory and Clinical Safety department at Merck and the Clinical Strategy department at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ. Kevin is completing a two-year post-doctoral fellowship with the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program in partnership with AstraZeneca.

Joyce Lo, PharmD, RPh
Joyce Lo is currently a first year post-doctoral fellow at AstraZeneca in medical information and medical strategy in hematology/oncology. She graduated pharmacy school from Northeastern University, where she received her PharmD. She is originally from Massachusetts and currently resides in Maryland for her fellowship program.

Parvathy Varma, PharmD, MS
After earning BS in Pharmacy from India, to complete her Masters at St. John’s University. She then worked as a research assistant in cancer and genetics research at University of Florida in Gainesville. Subsequently, Parvathy worked as an Adjunct Faculty in Genetics for a few years before joining Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. Parvathy received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2019 from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. She is currently completing her Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Global Regulatory Labeling Strategy through the Rutgers/AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program.

Sophia Wang, PharmD, RPh
Sophia Wang is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at AstraZeneca in Global Regulatory Affairs Oncology through the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program. Prior to joining AZ, Sophia earned her PharmD from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy and her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Maryland College Park.
