Frequently Asked Questions

What is an optometrist?

Doctors of Optometry (O.D.s / optometrists) are independent primary health care professionals for the eye. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage refractive errors, diseases of and injuries to the eye and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions that affect the eye.

  • Doctors of Optometry measure for and prescribe glasses and contact lenses for refractive conditions (hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism) and corneal medical conditions like keratoconus.
  • Doctors of Optometry prescribe medications to treat and manage infections of the eyes and eyelids.

What will the optometry students be doing during my examination?

The optometry students will be performing tests and obtaining eye measurements under the supervision of our attending optometrists. Our optometry students are highly trained in the classroom and clinic prior to examining patients in the Eye and Vision Center.

What insurances do you take?

We take a wide variety of insurances. For a  comprehensive list please see our insurance page.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an abnormal pressure in the eye that can damage the retina and optic nerve causing vision loss. Glaucoma is usually treated with eye drops but on occasion may require surgical intervention.

How would I know if contact lenses are right for me?

The development of new contact lens brands and materials makes them more accessible to a wider group of people than ever before. Contact lenses can now correct for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia (need for bifocal/multifocal lenses). Contact lenses can also improve vision for corneal medical conditions like keratoconus.
