Mother and Daughter Nurses Work on the COVID-19 Front Lines

Master of Science in Nursing student Alex Dube follows her mother's lead in nursing efforts on the COVID-19 front lines.

Alex Dube, BSN ’19, RN, MSN/FNP candidate ’22, a student in the Master of Science in Nursing — Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program, was featured on the Daily Nurse, a nursing news and career website, for her work alongside her mother at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Alex credits her mother, Jonna Dube, MBA, BSN, RN, who began at the center as a nurse in 2002 and now works as the Senior Director of Ambulatory Services, for inspiring her to join the field of nursing.

A 2019 graduate of the MCPHS Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, Alex was hired as a nurse on the inpatient pediatric floor but transitioned to work in the adult intensive care unit (ICU) when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “I was so happy that we were able to go to the COVID-19 ICUs and be that extra helping hand, because that’s what nursing is," she said in the Daily Nurse article.

Meanwhile, Alex's mother opened a nurse triage command center to take calls from patients in the community and advise them on symptoms, questions, and testing. Together, this mother-daughter duo demonstrates the different ways nurses have supported the COVID-19 front lines.
