MCPHS Manchester Honored with Statewide Awards

Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH), a consortium of university presidents and other individuals devoted to furthering civic purposes in higher education, recently recognized MCPHS Manchester with two 2020 President's Awards. The recipients were Cheryl Abel, Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy, and the Student Occupational Therapy Association. Each was chosen for their contributions to public service and community wellness.

Dr. Abel received the Presidents' Good Steward Award, given to the "faculty, administration, or staff member who has contributed his or her professional expertise in service to the wider community and who has significantly advanced public service on their campus." Abel and her Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences students spent time and effort delivering several presentations to the local AARP on the safe use of medications. Dr. Abel has also spoken to hundreds of area middle and high school students about the dangers of vaping, and she participates in youth outreach to teach students about health profession possibilities.

MCPHS Manchester's Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) was chosen as a winner of the 2020 Presidents’ Leadership Award. The award goes to an "individual student or student organization that has made outstanding contributions to community service, service learning, and/or civic engagement efforts on their campus. This award is for a student or student organization that has made service an integral part of their college experience as evidenced through their contribution to the community."

SOTA at MCPHS Manchester had a very busy year. Led by student president Hanna Hausler and faculty advisors Heidi Robertson, OTD, OTR/L and Angela Butler, MS, OTR/L, the association took active roles in multiple local events. SOTA participated in the Relay for Life of Greater Concord/Manchester, as well as several events to support the Families in Transition (FIT) program in Manchester. They also engaged with the Boy Scouts of America Troop in Auburn, New Hampshire, and brought clinical experts from the Manchester community to provide educational sessions on the MCPHS campus.
