Advanced Certificate in Mammography

Students must complete the following three courses:

• RSC 452 | Mammography Imaging Procedures & Patient Care (3 cr.)
• RSC 456C | Mammography Clinical Internship (3 cr.)
• RSC 450 | Mammography Board Review Course (3 cr.)

No transfer credits will be accepted for the certificate.

Upon successful completion of an accredited Mammography certificate, students achieve core learning objectives and student learning outcomes focused on clinical competency, patient care, and regulatory standards.

Clinical & Technical Competence

• Patient Positioning: Execute and adapt correct positioning for routine screening and diagnostic mammographic views, adjusting parameters for non-routine or limited-mobility patients.

Equipment Operation

• Safely operate digital mammography equipment, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) systems, and related compression accessories.

Image Production

• Consistently produce high-quality diagnostic images while practicing proper radiation safety.

Academic Knowledge & Critical Thinking Anatomy & Pathology Recognition

• Identify internal/external breast anatomy, tissue layers, and the mammographic appearance of benign and malignant pathologies.

Image Critique

• Critically evaluate the diagnostic quality of mammograms and independently recommend immediate corrective action for suboptimal images.

BI-RADS & Procedures

• Understand the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) and assist with special clinical procedures like needle localizations and biopsies.

Patient Care & Communication History Assessment

• Accurately interview patients to record relevant clinical history, breast myths, and physical changes.

Patient Comfort

• Address patient anxiety, explain compression procedures, and provide necessary psychosocial support during exams.

Clear Communication

• Demonstrate effective oral, written, and nonverbal communication with diverse patients and members of the interprofessional healthcare team.

Quality Control & Regulations QC Testing

• Perform and document standard quality control laboratory tests as required by the American College of Radiology (ACR)
  and federal MQSA guidelines.

Compliance Documentation

• Maintain meticulous data logs of clinical experience and mammography cases to fulfill national credentialing exam eligibility.

Professionalism & Growth Work Ethics

• Model professional work ethics, adhere to team practice concepts, and practice infection control (asepsis and sterile techniques).

Continuing Education

• Invest in personal and professional growth to keep up with evolving medical imaging technologies.
