One pre-med student is on a vision quest to revolutionize ophthalmology in South America.

Name: Guilherme Ozores
Degree: Bachelor of Science in Premedical Health Studies '28, minor in AI in Healthcare
Hometown: Brazil

Bold Goals

Guilherme Ozores said he wants to "revolutionize ophthalmology" in South America. The Bachelor of Science in Premedical Health Studies student and AI in Healthcare minor is already working toward that goal through EyeQuno, an AI startup he co-founded to develop diagnostic tools for healthcare providers. Inspired by conversations with his father, an ophthalmologist in Brazil, Ozores is helping test the technology in two Brazilian hospitals while learning how artificial intelligence is reshaping medicine through MCPHS's AI in Healthcare program. His ultimate goal: earn his MD and bring innovative eye-care solutions to patients around the world.

Quick Takes

• Chose MCPHS because of its healthcare focus and preparation for medical school and the MCAT.
• Added a minor in AI in Healthcare to gain experience in a rapidly evolving area of medicine.
• Co-founded EyeQuno, a startup developing AI diagnostic tools being tested in two hospitals in Brazil.
• Works at Massachusetts Eye and Ear while pursuing his degree.

Fun Facts

Candid Conversation

How did your interest in healthcare begin?

My dad's an ophthalmologist, so since I was a kid, I was introduced to the environment. It's one of my dreams just being able to help somebody. My dad always inspired me and always guided me at a young age. I saw how he helped people and I want to do the same thing. I want to follow his footsteps.

What drew you to the AI in Healthcare minor at MCPHS?

It's just so new, so innovative. And I've always wanted to learn a little more about it. So when I first heard that MCPHS was providing that program, I instantly jumped right on it.

What kinds of projects are you working on in the program?

We’re doing AI chatbots where they’re able to be used for educational purposes. I actually just built a chatbot for my project around macular degeneration, red eye, and cataract cases. So, if I say, ‘Oh, my vision is blurry,’ the AI would break it down and say, ‘You probably have this,’ and even recommend going to a doctor within 24 to 48 hours. We just recently built that, and it was a very cool project.

How do you see AI fitting into healthcare?

Some people are scared of AI and think they're going to replace their jobs, but I believe my program teaches us how to use AI to help us. It's more of a triage help tool than an actual thing that would just completely replace you.

What are your goals after graduation?

I want to get my MD as well. That's obviously one of my priorities. With the company we've been developing, we've been growing in Brazil. We've already been testing in two hospitals. We're trying to revolutionize ophthalmology in South America and later on expand worldwide.

Why MCPHS?

I describe it as a challenging school. It's hard, but it gets you where you need to go. And if you have a dream, if you have a goal to become any healthcare professional, I think MCPHS is the place to go to.

"This is MCPHS" is an ongoing series featuring future healthcare leaders from across the University's 14 schools.
