About
Thomas Avery Garran has studied plant medicine since 1989. He lived in China from 2007 to 2023, where he earned a PhD in Materia Medica and Plant Pharmacy from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, National Center for Materia Medica Resources and Daodi Herbs in Beijing. He also holds a master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine and a certificate in herbal medicine from the American School of Herbalism.
Garran is an internationally recognized educator, author, translator, and scholar of Chinese medicine. He serves as executive director of the East West School of Herbalism and president of Herb Whisperer, Inc., focusing on the education and cultivation of medicinal plants. He currently resides in western Massachusetts, where he and his wife are developing an herbal sanctuary and educational center.
