About Gelesis
Founded in 2006, Gelesis is a biotechnology company developing a novel hydrogel technology platform for GI-related chronic diseases. The proprietary Gelesis platform is the first and only superabsorbent hydrogel made exclusively from naturally derived building blocks. In April 2019, Gelesis received FDA clearance for its lead product candidate, Plenity™, as an aid to weight management in adults with excess weight or obesity, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25-40 kg/m2, when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. Novel hydrogel mechanotherapeutics based on the Gelesis platform technology are also being advanced in type 2 diabetes, and other GI inflammatory conditions, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC).
The Gelesis executive and advisory team includes some of the world’s leading experts in obesity, materials science, chronic disease research, and commercialization. Gelesis was co-founded by PureTech Health, a clinical stage biotherapeutics company dedicated to discovering, developing, and commercializing highly differentiated medicines for devastating diseases.
At Gelesis, we believe we can empower people to change their diet, lifestyle, and health. Named by Fast Company as one of the most innovative biotechnology companies of 2020, our mission is to bring a new approach to the millions of people looking for a safe, validated, and convenient approach to manage their weight.
