Mobile Device Security Best Practices

In the past several years the use of mobile devices has exploded. As with most people you most likely have several mobile devices (iPad, cell phone, etc.). The threat for Mobile devices has increased dramatically over the last few years as well. Mobile ransomware has increase 33% in the last year alone. So it is important that you protect your mobile devices with diligent security measures. Here are some tips.

  • Install antivirus on your mobile devices and your personal computers. Keep it updated and set it to scan periodically.
  • Set a strong password/PIN on your mobile device. Even better use stronger authentication mechanisms like biometrics (finger prints or facial recognition) or a pattern lock that does not resemble any personal attribute (don’t use your initial for the pattern). Don’t save your passwords or PINs on your smart phone.
  • Minimize the lock time on your password/PINs.
  • Regularly update the operating system and apps. Install patches as soon as they are available.
  • Enable a firewall on your laptop and avoid connecting to unsecure WiFi spots. Setting up a VPN is a good way to avoid a compromise at an unsecured wifi spot.
  • Review the permissions that you have enabled for apps that you have installed and make sure your privacy settings are set to what you need minimally.
  • Save your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 17 or 15 digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or UMTS network. The IMEI number provides an important function; it uniquely identifies a specific mobile phone. The mobile network provider can disable the phone using the IMEI number, even if the SIM card is changed.
  • Protect your personal information on mobile devices with encryption.
  • Leave your Blue Tooth turned Off when not in use
  • Use built-in anti-theft apps like Find My iPhone or other tracking software to track and possibly erase the data on your cell phone.
  • Avoid jailbreaking or rooting your phone, it increases the security risks to your data
